This information applies to the new storm shelters being constructed in Dyersburg that will be operational in the fall of 2014.
The City of Dyersburg operates 2 FEMA (F5) rated tornado shelters. One is located downtown across from Fire Station 1, and the other is located
next to the campus of Dyersburg High School. Both shelters have signage providing directions to the shelter, as well as electronic flashing lights to alert the public when the shelters are open.
The shelters are operational any time a tornado watch or warning has been issued. We strongly encourage you not to attempt to travel to a shelter during an actual tornado warning. You should shelter in place; traveling to a shelter during a warning could place you in harm’s way.
Never assume that a shelter is open when a warning is issued.
Personal Storm Shelters
If you have your own certified storm shelter you should register it with the Dyersburg Fire Department. This will ensure that the Dyersburg Fire Department will have your shelter GPS coordinates in a data base, which will enable responders to locate the shelter and ensure that you are not trapped inside, after a tornado strike. Call Dyersburg Fire Department at (731) 288-7614 for additional information.
The Dyer County Emergency Management Agency coordinates disaster shelters with the American Red Cross. There are numerous locations in Dyersburg and Dyer County that have been pre-identified as a disaster shelter.
Information will be disseminated about the location of these shelters, through local media, as needed.
