Training and Professional Development Unit

The Training - Professional Development Division is responsible for training of new recruits and recurring training for all permanent commissioned officers. The Division also assists officers with locating specialized training to enhance their career development skills.

All new Dyersburg Police recruits must complete an 14 week Field Training and Evaluation Program. This includes 80 hours of classroom instruction and practical exercises in areas of use of force, emergency vehicle operation, firearms training, officer survival, radio communications and department policy and general order review. After completing the FTEP program, the recruit will attend the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy in Nashville for 10 weeks of intensive training. Upon graduation from the academy, the recruit will return to the department to be re-acclimated before being assigned as a solo officer to a patrol squad.
